For more than a decade, Botanical Software has helped botanic gardens around the world with plant collection management tools, meeting garden staff at conferences, and listening to what you are struggling with in relation to your plant records.

Fast forward to 2021, our team launched Hortis, the next generation plant collection platform. Since then, our community has continued to grow every week and we are proud to announce that Hortis version 1.0 is now available and we are ready to onboard new gardens.

With Hortis, we are Rethinking Plant Records through user-centred design and technology as a means to solving many of the issues gardens are struggling with today.

IXth European Botanic Garden Congress, Budapest (Hungary)

In May, nearly two hundred delegates from 28 different European countries came together in Budapest for the ninth European Botanic Garden Congress titled “Botanic gardens – where people and plants meet”. The congress was organised by the European Botanic Gardens Consortium and the Hungarian Association of Arboreta and Botanic Gardens.

With a packed 5 day programme including 70 presentations, workshops, excursions and social events, we had plenty of opportunities to learn more about the community, catch up with old friends and build new relationships.

We wish to express our gratitude to the organising committee for putting together such a wonderful event, and we would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Hungary’s first botanic garden at Eötvös Lóránd University with its 250th anniversary. Finally, a big thank you goes to everyone who visited us at the exhibit and joined the workshop (see below).

2022 American Public Garden Association Annual Conference, Portland (US)

We were very excited to have the opportunity to join the annual conference as sponsor and exhibitors for the 10th time. As always, the Association managed to put together an awesome conference programme that was executed with precision.

A big thank you to the association for all their hard work and to the host gardens, Portland Japanese Garden, Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, Hoyt Arboretum and Lan Su Chinese Garden. Another amazing conference.

We would also like to congratulate Dr Casey Sclar with his new position as the H.O. Smith Endowed Director of The Arboretum at Penn State. For nearly 12 years, Casey has made a huge positive impact as Executive Director of the Association and he will truly be missed. Thank you Casey.

In addition to our workshop on Collection Value Scoring (see below), we also hosted a presentation titled “Reduce Tech Rage by Picking the Right Tools : The Future of Plant Records”. For those of you who joined the conference, you will be able to access the recording of the workshop as soon as it is made available by the association. However, our other presentation was not live streamed, so we are happy to let you know that you can watch that recording here:

Join our conference workshop retrospective

Together with Martin Smit from Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam, Dr Sam Brockington from Cambridge University Botanic Garden and Greg Payton from The Dawes Arboretum, we presented the workshop “The Future of living Collection management: Understanding the impact of your Collection Through value scoring” at the EuroGard Congress and at the Annual American Public Garden Conference.

We are still collating our notes and impressions from the workshops and will summarise our findings at our next webinar to be held on 21st of July, 16:00 Central European Time | 10:00am US Eastern Time. To join, just sign up to our blog and you will receive the zoom link about 48 hours before the event.

Thank you for your inspiring contributions

We would like to thank the community for their engagement, enthusiasm, and stimulating discussions. We are grateful for your contributions which help us to better understand your needs.

The plant records community is a wonderful crowd, eager to try out new things and share feedback, this helps us to support you on that journey.
