We are very excited to share our first monthly What’s New In Hortis update with you. With the Hortis platform, our engineers are able to deploy new features at a high rate without you needing to take any action. This means that users all over the world will always have the latest version on their smartphone, tablet and pc.
When new features are deployed, we will publish the news on the release notes page at support.hortis.com. We will use this blog series to summarise the highlights of the past month.
As we approach the end of 2021, we would like to take the opportunity to thank all of you who have taken part and engaged with us through these difficult times. Since joining Candide in 2020, we have been “rethinking plant records” and been solving challenges for the community. Here, we look back at our final webinar of 2021, entitled “Hortis is coming to town”.

A healthy plant records database is vital for the effective management of a plant collection. In our last webinar, we explored the topic of healthy plant records and how they help towards becoming a data-driven institution.

In many regions of the world, more than 75% of the population has a smartphone. Consequently, with the technological advancements in smartphone photography, most people have a very good camera within easy reach. For botanic gardens, it is without doubt that historic images and contemporary photographs both hold vital information and purpose.
With more seamless image capture and management workflows, there is certainly a lot of potential to increase the usefulness of photographs in plant collections. Luckily there are new technology and software development techniques that can help us make this process easier.
In botanic gardens and collection management, we often find that fruitful collaboration can play a vital role in the garden’s pursuit to reach its goals. The importance of having the ability to innovate and adapt in our industry cannot be overstated. We are continuously presented with exciting new innovations, many of which can radically change the way we perceive actions and processes.
